Today is Doordarshan's birthday. That is, Doordarshan, which started on 15 September 1959, has turned 62 years old today. Such a long period of time means a lot to any media. In such a situation, 130 crore population of the country wishes for the successful future of Doordarshan. Keeping its identity like this, it continues to set new records without staggering from its goals. On this day in 1959, the first telecast of Doordarshan was done on an experimental basis for half an hour on the basis of educational and development programs. In those days, Doordarshan was broadcast for half an hour only three days a week. At that time it was named 'Television India'. Later in 1975 it was renamed as 'Doordarshan' in Hindi.

In the initial days, 18 television sets and a large transmitter were installed all over Delhi. It was no less than a surprise to the people then. After that Doordarshan started its journey of gradual development and its telecast started in Delhi (1965), Mumbai (1972), Kolkata (1975), Chennai (1975). Initially, Doordarshan i.e. TV was seen only in Delhi and some surrounding areas. But the eighties can be seen as a historical milestone in the journey of Doordarshan. It was during this time that Doordarshan began to reach cities across the country and this was due to the 1982 Asian Games to be held in Delhi. One of the advantages of the Asian Games being held in Delhi was that the black and white television was now colourful.

Today's new generation which has grown up or is happening in the era of private channels. He may not believe in this magic or influence of Doordarshan, but the reality is that today's so called channel programs can hardly match the popularity of the early programs of Doordarshan. Be it 'Ramayana', 'Mahabharata', 'Chitrahaar' or any film, 'Hum Log' or 'Buniyaad', the way people used to stick to TV during their broadcast was really unique. During that period, Doordarshan showed family relations in real form. The family program 'Hum Log' started on Doordarshan which broke all the records of popularity. The Centre on September 8 gave the Supreme Court the “good news” that it had taken a decision to allow women entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA), so far a male bastion for recruitment into the Armed Forces.

If this decision comes through formally on paper, women can prepare for a career in the Armed Forces immediately after Class 12.

“There is good news. The Forces at the highest level and the government has taken a decision last evening to induct girls for permanent commission through the National Defence Academy,” Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati informed a Bench led by Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and M.M.
